Fall 2021

For this project I was tasked to design a book cover for a horror film of my choosing. As someone who is not a huge fan of horror and gore I was recommended a film that was eerie yet dreamy. Valerie and her Week of Wonders is a Czechoslovak surrealist fantasy horror novel that follows the story of a young girl becoming a woman. I made sure to capture many symbols throughout the story to include in my piece, the main imagery being the daisy with blood. I also took a lot of inspiration form Czech Folk Art and incorporated that in my design. I wanted to make a colorful yet dark piece, but it was challenging to choose the perfect color scheme that fully captures the theme.

I also created a poster that is fairly similar to the book cover but markets the film. I watched the film first before creating both the poster and book cover and every scene was art itself. With that in mind I wanted to capture the art the best of my abilities through color and illustrations!
